Aedes de Venustas - Copal Azur

Who better than Duchaufour could have brought incense from the church to the coastal jungle?
Surprisingly similar to incense, copal, whose name means "incense" in Nahuatl, can be extracted from a variety of trees native to Central and South America. It was burned by the Maya and Aztecs to "feed" the gods. Today it is still used in Mexico for spiritual purposes.

Since copal resin cannot be used as a perfume ingredient, it is evoked as if by magic through three different incense extractions, from the top notes to the base notes, extraordinarily occupying 30% of the formula.
Aedes de Venustas co-founder Karl Bradl was drawn to its scent while cycling along the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, near the Sian Ka'an nature reserve, which means "Gateway to Heaven".

As the Maya citadel looms over the lush beach paradise of Tulum, the steep mineral cliff of incense dominates the olfactory landscape of Copal Azur.

Ozonated and salty notes recall the Caribbean Sea and the local cenotes, the underground freshwater pools that dot the Yucatán Peninsula. A flash of green alludes to the lush Mexican jungles, cardamom peeks through the damp, woody undergrowth of patchouli and myrrh, while a touch of almondy tonka bean and amber, in honor of the Jaguar God of terrestrial fire, recalls the roundness of copal and its burning embers.
